Hebrew is a language that derived from the Canaanite group of Semitic languages.

The language is strongly connected to the language of the Bible; the Old testament, of the early days, (B.C.) The earliest known written script found – in Hebrew – dates from the 11th Century, B.C.

The language served the early Jews but it appears that as of 600 B.C it was gradually replaced by Aramaic. By 70 A.D the use of Hebrew as an everyday language had gradually ceased, but it went on being used for literary and religious

functions.

Following global attempts to revive the spoken language, an outstanding attempt was made by a Jew, a newcomer to the land of Israel; (in the 19th century), Eliezer Ben-Yehuda (1858-1922).

Ben –Yehuda was the first citizen to enforce the use of Hebrew in his home, and encouraged the use of Hebrew amongst others, as well as in schools.

Today Hebrew is spoken by some 6 million people in Israel, where it is an official language along with Arabic.

Some other 3 million people speak the language overseas countries; in the UK and the US, in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Palestinian West Bank and Gaza, Panama ad many other places on the globe.
